Fundamental Differences

Some people say that there are no differences between girls and boys.... that it is just the enviroment they are in. This may be true, but I don't believe it. These are pictures my two amazing children drew yesterday.

Cyan, age 7, titled; Grandma's Flowers:

Alex, age 12. This one is simply titled 'WAR!':

And this one 'Aftermath':

Those pictures certainly do make your point. I had a child development teacher who once told the class that if you gave a boy a doll, he would use it like a gun and pretend to shoot with it. If you gave a little girl a toy gun, she would try to mother it.

My baby girly isn't old enough yet to draw developed pictures, but I've seen a ton of war pictures and similar during my years mothering boys.

Yep...there IS a difference!
I see it with my children, as well!

Your children are five years apart in age. (Furthermore, of course, they are only two children, and generalizing from them to all children everywhere would be pointless.) What should this show, then?

My older niece routinely tells stories (she's not a big artist) about people getting killed or hurt, and went through a whole phase a year ago where she was constantly "shooting" or "bombing" or "killing" people. (She got it from a friend of hers. Another girl.) Sometimes she draws flowers. DEAD flowers. Did a whole little lifecycle where most of the pictures were of the flower wilting and dying.

The younger one draws pictures ostensibly of firetrucks and busses.

What does this mean about other children?

Heck if I know.

Even if it *did* mean something, the cause would still be unknown. Is it innate? Or is it societal? Or is it some combination? There is literally *no* ethical way of finding out - and to assume that the answer is known (and applies to all, or even most children!) is folly.

Yes, the variations are astounding, arn't they?

That said... please don't just post to be contrary. It is tiresome.

What is the point of your posting this if you only want everybody to smile and nod? If people don't disagree, there is no conversation.

Besides, you're wrong.

Oh, you might not be wrong about gender - really, as I said, there's no way of proving that one way or another - but you're wrong in your assertation that two pictures drawn by two children of different ages can somehow prove the point that it's all nature and not nurture.

Wrong in a very predictable - and, yes, *tiresome* - way.

Did you even read my post? Please don't post to me again.
